Caring for the People Who Care for the Planet

Caring for the People Who Care for the Planet

I spent years thinking about and participate in the society that aimed for making organisations more sustainable. With time, I started to notice what the people doing that work were experiencing.

I became less interested in the strategies themselves and more interested in the people trying to make them happen.

Many were younger professionals, trying to push sustainability forward inside organisations where not everyone understood why the work mattered.

And they were carrying a lot. A demanding job, family life, concerns about climate and the future, expectations coming from many directions, and the feeling that:

...there is always more that should be done.

It made me come back to the same thought: How do we ask people to care for the Earth if they are exhausted themselves?

Perhaps caring for the people doing this work needs to be part of how we think about sustainability too. Not as something separate from the work, but as part of making it possible to continue.

If you work in sustainability, notice what you are carrying alongside the work itself. What would help make your own work more sustainable? And you, maintaining your energy at pace, healthy and vivid?

That is the path I took when I decided to to assist the people in sustainability, instead the strategy site of the corporates.

This all starts from within, and is very important for us all to give it mild attention.
