Between Earth & Oneself

Between Earth & Oneself

Recently I joined an online conference about climate issues as many times before and the health of our ecosystems. Listening to the researchers speaking, I found myself thinking again about something quite simple: the climate conversation is really about the systems that support life.

Many scientists today are responding to a growing call for more research, but also for better communication of what we already know.

Knowledge certainly is already there and still expanding quickly, yet the challenge often seems to be how to translate that knowledge into understanding and action. Even more important action by all of us.

Science communication therefore becomes incredibly important, but there is never a really emphasis on that, perhaps one day. I mean it is for few to understand the publishing papers & reports, but more importantly supporting people to understand the precious energy around us in our oceans, mountains and rivers, and why it matters.

For Iceland this feels particularly relevant. Our history and identity are inclusive to nature, especially the ocean. When we look at global environmental challenges, it becomes clear that even our tiny island is still so important to the whole system.

One thought stayed with me after the conference: all this talk about climate action for the last years is mostly about our relationship we have with the Earth itself.

For many people working in sustainability, this can sometimes be unclear. The challenges are complex and the changes needed are significant. But gatherings like this are also a reminder that many people across the world are working toward the same direction, healthier systems and a more balanced relationship between ourselves and the planet.

Perhaps real change begins there.

Be kind, BGlobal and heart & Mind.
