Reflections from a Climate Conversation

Reflections from a Climate Conversation

This morning I joined an online conference about climate issues and the health of our ecosystems. Listening to the scientists and researchers speaking, I found myself thinking again about something quite simple: the climate conversation is really a conversation about the systems that support life.

At the same time, I noticed a well known heaviness, at least in my mind, a sense of how much we are trying to understand and how much is at stake. Earthwise, humankind-wise.

Many scientists today are responding to a growing call for more research, but also for better communication of what we already know. Knowledge is expanding quickly, yet the challenge often seems to be how to translate that knowledge into understanding and action. There is a gap between what is known and what is lived.

Science communication therefore becomes incredibly important. Not only publishing papers or reports, but helping people understand them. But more important to notice what is around us,  in our oceans, forests and atmosphere, and why it matters.

For Iceland this feels particularly relevant. Our history and identity are so closely connected to nature, especially the ocean. When we look at global environmental challenges, it becomes clear that even small countries like ours are part of a much larger picture.

One thought stayed with me after the conference: climate action is not only about technologies, policies or economic systems. It is also about the relationship we have with one another, and with Earth.

And perhaps this relationship is not only something we study, rather to feel & reconnect with, ….and, in fact, remember.

For many people working in sustainability, this can sometimes feel overwhelming. The challenges are complex and the changes needed are significant. Yet, in moments like these, something also becomes clearer: change is not only about doing more, but about understanding our authentic being, and true place within these systems. To be at comfort there.

Gatherings like this are a reminder that many people across the world are working in the same direction, toward healthier ecosystems and to cultivate the relationship between people and the planet.

Perhaps real change begins there.
With understanding, with conversations, and with the willingness to keep learning.

BGlobal in heart & mind,
and be kind.
