“What should I do?” might not be the right question for leaders anymore.
Many leaders, whether early in their careers or highly experienced, are constantly trying to improve performance. We all are, it just human, to want changes and do better. The instinct is often to focus on doing more, deciding faster, delivering better results.
But, what if leadership begins not with what we do, but with how we choose to be?
The concept of performance leadership is a balance between two dimensions.
(1) Leadership of doing: setting goals, making decisions, driving results, solving problems.
This is what most of us have been trained in.
(2) Leadership of being. This is about presence, emotional intelligence, authenticity and the ability to create trust and connection.
It is how a leader shows up in moments that matter.
So, if there is a harmony between those two, you get long-term results. And that is what is needed in sustainability leadership. Resilience, faith in our work and long-term vision.
Practical considerations
- Take a moment to define how you want to be as a leader, not only what you want to achieve
- Build awareness of your presence in conversations, are you truly there, or only solving?
- Create space for empathy and listening, under pressure too
- Align your actions with your values, even in small, everyday decisions
- Remember that trust is built in consistency, not in single actions
When leaders priorities being, their doing naturally changes.
Perhaps sustainable leadership is not about adding more tools or strategies, but about returning to something simple, more peaceful, more human.
And from there, find a deeper connection to nature, people and purpose.
BGlobal in heart & mind,
Berglind.
